Before the Dream House

What twenty-five square metres taught us.

Before the Dream House

What twenty-five square metres taught us.

People often ask us if twenty-five square metres were enough.

Looking back, we’re no longer sure that’s the right question.

When we moved into our tiny container, we thought we were simply waiting for our dream home to be finished.

Instead, we discovered a different way of living.

Two people working from home. One small room. Video calls, coffee breaks, snowy winters, workouts in the middle of the floor, and countless ordinary days that slowly became some of our favourite memories.

The container was only meant to be temporary.

The lessons we learned there weren’t.

At first, we counted the months until the new house would be ready.

Then, without really noticing, we stopped counting.

Life settled into a surprisingly comfortable rhythm. There was less room for unnecessary things, fewer distractions and fewer decisions to make. Everything had its place, and somehow, so did we.

Looking back, that tiny home never felt as small as we expected.

Every square metre had more than one purpose.

The living room was also the office.

The office became the dining room.

Sometimes it even became our gym.

On winter evenings we simply pushed the furniture aside, rolled out our exercise mats and worked out in the middle of the room.

Working from home together was probably our biggest challenge.

Most days it worked perfectly.

Whenever we both had important video calls at the same time, one of us quietly moved into the bedroom while the other stayed in the main room.

It wasn’t the perfect office.

It was simply the one we had.

And somehow, it worked remarkably well.

Living in a small home changes your habits in ways you don’t expect.

You stop buying things just because there’s room for them.

Every object has to earn its place.

Clutter becomes impossible to ignore.

Without trying, we slowly discovered that owning less gave us more space to enjoy everyday life.

Some mornings we didn’t do much at all.

We simply sat outside with a cup of coffee, watching the snow quietly cover the fields around us.

Inside, there wasn’t much space.

Outside, there was more than enough.

Those slow winter mornings remain some of our favourite memories.

Today we live in the home we spent years planning.

It gives us the comfort and flexibility we once dreamed about.

But looking back, we’ve realised something unexpected.

Happiness didn’t begin when the new house was finished.

It had already found us long before that.

Inside twenty-five square metres.

What stayed with us

We thought we were waiting for our dream home.

In reality, those twenty-five square metres were quietly preparing us for it.

Sometimes the smallest places leave the biggest memories.

🎙️ A small note

Living in a tiny home simply made many decisions for us.

Over time, we realised that owning less wasn’t the goal — it was just a natural consequence of living in a smaller space.
