When we first planned our container house, we knew one thing from the beginning: we wanted a green roof.
Not because it was trendy, but because we wanted the house to become part of the landscape instead of standing out from it.
Several years later, people still ask us the same questions.
Is it worth it?
Does it really help?
Is it maintenance-free?
Our answer is still the same.
Yes — we would build it again.
We’ve been living with this green roof for several years now, so this isn’t a first impression—it’s everyday experience.

It really makes a difference in summer
Our roof faces the sun almost all day.
Without the layer of vegetation, the roof would absorb much more heat. We never measured exact temperatures, but after living here through several summers, the difference is noticeable.
The house stays surprisingly comfortable, even during long sunny days.
It’s one of those things you stop thinking about—because it simply works.
It helps in winter too
During winter the roof works in the opposite direction.
Together with good insulation, the green roof helps keep indoor temperatures more stable.
It isn’t magic, but it becomes another layer quietly doing its job every day.
Even outside the flowering season, the roof continues to protect the house while blending into the surrounding landscape.
The part we enjoy most
For us, the biggest benefit isn’t the insulation.
It’s looking out of the window and seeing the roof change with the seasons.
In spring it slowly comes back to life.
In early summer it turns into a carpet of flowers.
Later, the colours become calmer again before winter arrives.
Instead of looking at metal sheets, we see something alive.

Is it really maintenance-free?
People often ask if a green roof needs any maintenance.
The honest answer is simple:
Nothing is completely maintenance-free.
Once or twice a year we remove a few weeds and add a little fertiliser in spring.
That’s really about it.
No mowing.
No watering.
No regular care.
Most of the time, we simply leave it alone.
One thing we’d do exactly the same
If you’re thinking about building a green roof, plan for it from the beginning.
The structure has to be designed for the extra weight, so it’s much easier to include it during construction than to add it later.

Would We Choose It Again?
If someone asked us today whether we would choose a green roof again, the answer would be immediate.
Absolutely.
Not only because it helps keep the house comfortable throughout the year.
But because over time it stopped feeling like a roof.
It simply became another small piece of the landscape around us.
